Don’t let the fear of affecting your rankings hold you back from keeping your content fresh and up-to-date.
By the end of this issue, you will be able to:
- Audit your site to identify content that needs updating
- Distinguish evergreen vs time-sensitive content and apply content pruning
- Focus on the right KPIs to measure the success of your content updates
Many content creators avoid updating their content because they fear that it will negatively impact their search rankings.
However, outdated content can lead to a poor user experience and hurt your rankings in the long run.
Updating content can provide numerous benefits, including updated information for target audience, improved user experience, increased traffic, and higher engagement.
I’ll guide you through the process of updating your content without negatively impacting your search rankings.
Follow these steps to update your content effectively and improve your search rankings in the process.
Step 1: Audit your site
Auditing your site is crucial because it helps you identify the areas of your site that require improvement.
By conducting a site audit, you can assess the overall health of your site, including its performance, content, and structure.
For instance, you may discover broken links or outdated content that needs to be updated. You can use tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and SEMrush to conduct a site audit.
Step 2: Distinguish Evergreen vs Time sensitive content
It’s essential to differentiate between evergreen and time-sensitive content to know when to update your content.
Evergreen content is content that remains relevant and valuable over time, while time-sensitive content has an expiration date.
You can use content pruning to remove outdated and irrelevant content from your site, thereby improving your site’s overall quality and ranking.
Step 3: Focus on right KPIs
Depending on why you create content, the KPIs would vary.
If you sell subscriptions to SaaS & incorporate content marketing for it, then KPIs should be paid sign ups. If you’re an affiliate, your KPI should be successful sales.
Traffic from search engines should never be a KPI for any blog, no matter what your business model is. Traffic that doesn’t make money is fit for nothing. Please don’t fool yourself if you think ads will pay you enough. You’ll barely breakeven.
Choosing the right key performance indicators (KPIs) is crucial to measure the success of your content marketing efforts.
Depending on your business goals, your KPIs may vary. For example, if you’re a SaaS company, your KPIs should be focused on driving paid sign-ups rather than just traffic.
Similarly, if you’re an affiliate marketer, your KPIs should be focused on successful sales. Focusing on the right KPIs will help you achieve your business objectives and measure the success of your content marketing strategy.
